Eagles Rest - The Ala Family in Thailand

August 2008

Dear Friend

"Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord." - Exodus 14:13

So, have we lost sight of the vision for Eaglesrest? Are we sidetracked in our purpose in any way?

We don't believe so. God has provided this place of small beginnings and through all the recent trials and circumstances which have threatened to discourage and bring despair, we hear Him say, "Stand Still".

Ruth plus our four make five happy home schoolers...

Will you consider 'Prayer-adoption' for one of these?

We have recently prayerfully considered if we are in the right place; but as we see God's love and faithfulness we cannot do anything more than believe and continue the course He has set for us. This is a time when we can stand still and renew our strength in preparation for what we know lies ahead. Does it mean that we are doing nothing? No.

We are far from idle. While we wait in expectation and trust, God has placed us among a precious group of children who need practical help, advocacy and prayers.

Each day we bring encouragement and hope to Pastor Prakop and his wife just by our presence with them. (Isn't that partially the vision of Eaglesrest - encourage the national pastors...?)

In the above passage Moses could have presumed the Lord would do something if he allowed the children of Israel to move forward. Instead he told them to stand still and see God work. Stand. Not sit it out. Not sleep away the waiting time. But standing ready for action and direction. And so we cheerfully perform the seeming unrelated tasks that God places before us while we wait for the inevitable "Go forward..."

Thank you for standing with us. As we do, let us not forget to encourage one another.

Thanks and concerns to share:

  • Praise that Rommel's new work permit covers us until June 2009 allowing a few extra months to finalise the registration of the Eaglesrest Foundation.
  • There is a desperate need for 'House Parents' to take over the care of the Thai children here. While Pastor Prakop and Naw do a great job, they too recognise that they don't have enough time to fully supervise and provide all the attention that is needed. The ability to speak Thai is a necessary requirement.

Some of the children with new linen bought with a donation from a prayer group in Australia.

  • Some of our Thai children attend a government High School in the area. We have been told by locals that there is a serious problem with girls as young as thirteen being solicited by older students for paying customers- sold into the sex trade during school hours -and some even abducted out of the area. Some of our girls are at risk so we ask you to pray protection over them.
  • Praise that we received a donation from a ladies Bible study group which enabled the purchase of some new bedding and towels for the Thai children. They still have many practical (as well as spiritual) needs.
  • Praise that we are able to minister through Sunday school each week, providing spiritual food for the enthusiastic Thai children from the church and neighbourhood.
  • Praise that I have had response from one traveller offering to bring supplies into Thailand for us. Pray there would be more.
  • Pray for Rommel as he continues volunteer work in Phuket on a weekly basis. His left arm is still giving him a lot of trouble and often the pain makes physical work almost impossible.

The Thai children enjoy time at the local water falls with Rommel and our children.
  • Praise that Colleen, Stephanie, Jefferson and Nicole are gaining help and moving along very well in their schoolwork under the capable tutoring provided by Clara.
  • Pray that another teacher will follow even for a short time. I am currently ordering next years supply of school material in the anticipation of being able to have it transported here before it is needed. (having it sent direct to us incurs heavy tax payments)
  • Pray for the needed finance for the registration of Eaglesrest as well as the process itself going through smoothly this time.
  • Pray for individuals or groups to come and assist with the many needs here.
  • Praise that the Eaglesrest Land Fund received over $AUS260 in bank interest for the last quarter. It is growing slowly but surely! Total stands at $AUS17,588
  • Praise that I (Janene) was able to obtain a Thai International driving licence which is valid for the next twenty years.
Until next month,

Rommel & Janene
